Sharsheret and the Sephardic Community Center will present the symposium, “Genetics and the Sephardic Jewish Woman: Understanding Our Past, Guarding Our Future.” Geneticist Dr. Harry Ostrer, Oncologist Dr. Ruth Oratz, and Sharsheret Executive Director Eillene Leistner will discuss new research on genetic susceptibility for Jewish women of Sephardi descent, breast cancer surveillance recommendations for all women, and support options available to Jewish women and their families facing breast cancer.

National Teleconference

Sharsheret will present a free national teleconference, “Let’s Get Personal: Intimacy And Sexuality After Breast Cancer,” Tuesday, November 6, 2007, 8:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. (EST). Panelists Dr. Elizabeth Poynor (Gynecological Oncologist, private practice), Sage Bolte (Social Worker, Inova Cancer Services) and Rachi Lerner (Psychotherapist, private practice) will discuss the sexual side effects of breast cancer treatment and address your concerns about interpersonal relationships affected by breast cancer, including religious and spiritual considerations.

Teleconference for Single Women

Sharsheret will present a free Teleconference, “The High Holidays and Renewal,” on Tuesday, September 4, 2007, 8:30 – 9:30 p.m. (EST). Featured guest speaker, Rachel Lerner, M.S., will discuss how to address religious and communal challenges during the High Holidays, a time of deep insight and reflection. The Teleconference is part of Empower, a new Sharsheret program addressing the needs of single or newly single Jewish women facing breast cancer. In addition to teleconferences Empower offers resource and information materials focusing on issues unique to single women.
