Teaneck, New Jersey (April 14, 2011) – Sharsheret, a national not for profit organization supporting young women and their families, of all Jewish backgrounds, facing breast cancer, will celebrate its 10th Anniversary at a Benefit to be held on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at the Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe in New Jersey.

Sharsheret will recognize the valuable contributions of Guest of Honor Naomi Kanovsky (Englewood, New Jersey) and Lisa Altman Volunteer Tribute Award Recipient Marcie Cappell (New York City). The event will feature a special acapella performance by renowned singer and songwriter Neshama Carlebach and an exclusive photo exhibit “Sharsheret, Changing the Face of Breast Cancer,” by acclaimed photographer Gail Hadani. The Benefit will also include an auction chaired by Jennifer Aranoff (Teaneck, NJ), Ally Cooper (Teaneck, NJ), Batya Paul (Bergenfield, NJ), and Penny Rabinowitz (Englewood, NJ), showcasing electronics, jewelry, Judaica, autographed sports memorabilia, and gift certificates. Benefit Chairs this year include Tammy Bryk (Jamaica Estates, NY), Thalia Federbush (Englewood, NJ), and Alissa Zagha (Teaneck, NJ).

“Sharsheret is grateful to our incredible honorees and the thousands of women and men who have helped us reach this important milestone, tirelessly dedicating their time and efforts in support of Sharsheret,” said Director of Operations Elana Silber. “Using her own experiences living with ovarian cancer, Naomi Kanovsky helped us develop a new program for women and families facing ovarian cancer. Marcie Cappell has been an active volunteer and Sharsheret peer supporter since our inception, reaching out and supporting other young women diagnosed with breast cancer. Their efforts will undoubtedly help us achieve our mission to support all young Jewish women and families facing breast cancer and ovarian cancer nationwide.”

Since its founding in 2001, Sharsheret has responded to more than 24,000 breast cancer inquiries, involved more than 1,200 peer supporters, and presented over 200 educational programs nationwide. Sharsheret now offers a continuum of care for the Jewish community – addressing the needs of those who are concerned about the risk of breast cancer in their family, those who have been diagnosed with the disease and are undergoing treatment, and those who face issues of survivorship or recurrence. Over the past 10 years, Sharsheret has developed 10 national programs, including the Peer Support Network, connecting women newly diagnosed or at high risk of developing breast cancer one-on-one with others who share similar diagnoses and experiences; Embrace, supporting women living with advanced breast cancer; Genetics for Life, addressing hereditary breast cancer and ovarian cancer; and the Ovarian Cancer Program, providing tailored resources and support for Jewish women and families facing ovarian cancer.
