National Sorority, AEPhi, Chooses Sharsheret As Its New Philanthropy
Teaneck, New Jersey (November 15, 2007) — Sharsheret, a national not-for-profit organization supporting young Jewish women facing breast cancer, was recently chosen as a new Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority national philanthropy. Alpha Epsilon Phi (AEPhi) is a national sorority, founded in 1909 by seven Jewish women, dedicated to helping women become the best they can be.
In an effort to raise breast cancer awareness among young adults on college campuses, AEPhi chapters and alumnae across the country are partnering with Sharsheret to educate students about breast health, appropriate breast cancer screening methods, and Sharsheret. AEPhi chapters will also host events and fundraising initiatives in support of Sharsheret’s national programs and services. “We were immediately impressed with the work the organization has been doing to help young women dealing with breast cancer. Making it an AEPhi national philanthropy was a natural,” said former AEPhi National President Connie Sandler. “Unfortunately breast cancer affects women at all ages but we hope by partnering with this wonderful organization we can help raise much-needed funds and help bring increase awareness of breast cancer among young women.”
Sharsheret will provide AEPhi chapters with culturally-sensitive breast cancer information and resources to share with their members. Sharsheret speakers will also be available to present at AEPhi sponsored breast cancer awareness events. “The concern about women’s health issues are beginning to be addressed more and more every day,” said Sharsheret’s Senior Program Coordinator and an AEPhi alumnus Ellen Kleinhaus. “The women of AEPhi are our best PR for getting the message out about early detection and raising awareness. Together we will be saving lives.”

Since the organization’s founding in 2001, Sharsheret has received over 13,000 phone calls from those affected by breast cancer, health care professionals, women’s organizations, Jewish organizations, and others interested in learning more about the important services Sharsheret provides nationwide.
Sharsheret has developed three core programs in response to the needs of young Jewish women facing breast cancer: The Link Program, a peer support network connecting young women newly diagnosed or at high risk of developing breast cancer with others who share similar diagnoses and experiences by telephone and online on the Sharsheret Forum; Education and Outreach Programs, including health care symposia addressing the concerns of Jewish women and younger women facing breast cancer, Sharsheret Supports, a national model for local support groups, and Family Focus, a program for caregivers and family members; and Quality of Life Programs, including the Busy Box for children with a parent facing breast cancer, Best Face Forward to address the cosmetic side effects of treatment, Empower, for single women facing breast cancer, and Embrace, a support program for women living with advanced breast cancer.
