My Summer Internship at Sharsheret
By Alexa Schulman
Before this summer, I knew about Sharsheret because it is my sorority’s philanthropy. I knew the organization supported women and families facing breast and ovarian cancer, but I never truly understood the impact it had until I got the opportunity to intern here. Since my grandma had breast cancer, the mission already felt personal to me, but this experience made it even more
meaningful.
Throughout my internship, I worked on a variety of projects, including research, outreach, and even designing graphics on Canva. I also had the opportunity to attend events, meet survivors, and help plan Sharsheret’s Annual Benefit this December. It was inspiring to see everything that happens behind the scenes and how every person and every project contributes to supporting individuals and families facing cancer. Watching so many people work together toward one
shared mission showed me just how much dedication goes into making a meaningful difference.
One of the most memorable parts of this internship was meeting survivors and hearing their stories. It’s one thing to know what an organization does, but it’s completely different to meet the people whose lives have been touched by its work. Hearing their experiences made Sharsheret’s mission feel even more real and reminded me that every email sent, every event planned, and every project completed ultimately supports someone during one of the most difficult times in their life.
This internship also showed me that making a difference doesn’t always look the way you expect. Sometimes it’s researching a new organization, writing an email, helping with an event, or completing a project behind the scenes. Even though those tasks may seem small on their own, together they help Sharsheret reach more people and continue making such an incredible impact.
I’m leaving this summer with so much more than internship experience. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of Sharsheret’s mission, met incredibly inspiring people, and learned that meaningful work is often built through countless small acts of compassion and dedication. Most importantly, I’ve seen the power of community and the difference it can make in people’s lives.
I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learned and for everyone at Sharsheret who made this such a welcoming and meaningful experience. I’ll always be thankful that I had the opportunity to play a small part in such an incredible mission.
